Black Sea Coast. The area of Georgia known in ancient times as Colchis is a mostly swampy plain bordered by the Black Sea and the lower reaches of the Rioni river. The banks of the Rioni and Lake Paliastomi near the town of Poti are still covered with forests of alder, elm, and endemic wingnut. Most of the region however has been transformed into cultivated landscape. The climate is mild, with hot summers and humid rainy winters. Birds to watch in the area include different species of waterfowl. Large aggregations are located around Lake Paliastomi, in the reservoirs and lakes along the river Rioni, and on the Black Sea coast. In the southern part of the plain, there is a bottleneck where high numbers of migrating birds, especially birds of prey, can be watched in the spring and fall. In wetland forests, various songbirds can be watched throughout spring and summer. In some areas, pheasants can still be found. It is noteworthy that the pheasant widely introduced in Europe and North America was first discovered by ancient Greeks in Colchis. Its Latin name (Phasianus colchicus) combines the ancient name of the river Rioni and the town Poti (Phasis) and “Colchis“.
